POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Executive Director

The Nebraska Association of Behavioral Health Organizations is seeking an Executive Director to advance the mission to build strong alliances to ensure quality behavioral health services, including substance use and mental health services, are accessible to everyone in our state.

The Nebraska Association of Behavioral Health Organizations (NABHO) was founded in 1997 when the Community Mental Health Provider group and the Substance Use Disorder group decided to bring the two groups together. They believed joining forces would mean more voices and stronger messaging, leading to the adoption of more policies to better support services for those with mental illness and addictions.

Our Association is made up of 60 community mental health and substance use disorder providers, Regional Behavioral Health Authorities, hospitals, and consumers groups. The membership elects a nine-member Executive Committee charged with working with the Executive Director for the oversight of the Association’s business. They have an operating budget of $250,000 and employ one full-time Administrative Assistant and a contract with a full-time lobbyist.

Reporting to the board of directors, the Executive Director will provide association members with a voice in the public policy arena at the local, state, and national levels.

Our members count on us to be their voice in the public policy arena at the local, state, and national levels. NABHO Key programs include:

  • Advocating for members and their key stakeholders by raising awareness, as well as organizing advocacy and lobbying events.
  • Educational programs for membership through our monthly meetings, lunch and learns, and other events as requested by members.
  • Keep members informed through regular meetings with key stakeholders.
  • Connecting members through meetings, weekly reports, and social media.

Key responsibilities:

Leadership

The executive director is an executive leader who responds to the needs of members, staff and the board; Keeps a focus on the long-term objectives of the organization; Balances strategic and tactical responsibilities; And represents this organization at the local, state and federal level. The executive director ensures organizational excellence through assessment, transparency, collaboration, learning, creativity, communication, accountability, and exceptional member service.

The executive director of this organization is responsible for our overall organizational success by providing strategic, operational, ethical and inspirational leadership consistent with the mission, values, policies, applicable laws and regulations and contractual obligations of this organization. The executive director is the primary contact for anything related to the Association’s business.

The executive director values strong internal operations, fiscal responsibility, accountability and transparency, and ensures efficient, accurate, and consistent financial operations and practices. Additionally, the executive director will ensure that varied strategies for cultivation of financial support are on-going.

Advocacy and Sector Voice:

The executive director works actively with nonprofits, policymakers, philanthropic organizations, government, business, media, and the public at large to advance public awareness and understanding of and support for the mission. The executive director builds coalitions, identifies alternatives, gathers input, testifies before legislative committees, and strengthens legislative options to support stakeholders.

Strategic Planning, Marketing Relations, Communications:

The executive director works collaboratively with board members, advisory council members, staff and key sector stakeholders to create, implement, assess and reassess the strategic plan. Additionally, the executive director will oversee and direct media relations, external communications, public relations and marketing as it relates to the mission of the organization and its strategic plan.

Overseeing Staff and General Management:

The executive director has an overall responsibility for building and leading a dynamic and cohesive team and developing staff members to their highest potential. The executive director serves as a model for other nonprofit leaders on building and motivating effective staff teams in the sector.

Executive Committee Relations:

The executive director works closely with the Executive Committee to help it fulfill its governance responsibilities. The executive director advises and educates committee members, identifies new committee members, communicates clearly and regularly with committee members, and develops a close partnering relationship with committee members.

Member Services:

The executive director understands the responsibilities of managing a membership organization as well as the varying needs of stakeholder organizations and ensures that each member receives outstanding services on a consistent basis. The executive director actively supports building the membership base as well as building the value members experience.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Strong understanding of policy development and the legislative process
  • Local, regional, or statewide advocacy and/or public policy experience
  • Demonstrated ability in fund development, marketing, and communications
  • Understanding of behavioral health care system
  • Successful experience working with an executive committees or boards
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Experience establishing strong community relations
  • Supervisory experience
  • Financial management experience
  • High degree of integrity, creativity and transparency; demonstrated commitment
